However, it is most often created by burning fossil fuels: coal, oil, and natural gas. The reliance on fossil fuels for many years has triggered several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ugc.berkeley.edu\/background-content\/resource-extraction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. Accessing fossil fuels is also damaging. Entire habitats can be lost through processes like wholesale deforestation when extracting fuel underground.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning fossil fuels has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eesi.org\/papers\/view\/fact-sheet-climate-environmental-and-health-impacts-of-fossil-fuels-2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative health consequences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for humans as well. Humans can develop asthma, cancer, heart disease, and experience premature death when consistently exposed to the environmental pollutants produced by the burning, waste, and use of fossil fuels. With a growing human population, there is potential for increased energy consumption, including the use of fossil fuels. This can lead to a rise in environmental and human health risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To combat these consequences, advocacy for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/raising-ambition\/renewable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">renewable energy resources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as wind, solar, and water has increased. Renewable energy pollutes less and releases less carbon dioxide, but it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilderness.org\/news\/blog\/faq-what-are-environmental-impacts-renewable-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not perfect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are instances in which, when poorly set up, renewable energy sources can still disrupt habitats. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep-wcmc.org\/en\/news\/the-green-energy-transition-and-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mining to build the technology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for renewable energy has negative environmental and social impacts. When not incorporated into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/understand-energy.stanford.edu\/why-we-care\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">existing systems and structures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, solar and wind energy require large plots of land to capture energy. Others argue that solar and wind farms can be perceived as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/climate-change\/news\/richard-tice-ed-miliband-andrea-jenkyns-reform-uk-boston-b2799055.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eyesore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy plays a major role in the development of a community. Energy powers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unhabitat.org\/topic\/urban-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large-scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> community services like food production, water distribution, and transportation, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nolinrecc.com\/what-uses-energy-in-my-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smaller-scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> services like heating and cooling homes, cooking, and refrigeration. Yet many places today remain without access to energy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable modern energy for all is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goal 7 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SDGs). When connected to a larger energy grid, day-to-day functions are made easier and safer.
