Greener Cities are Stronger Cities

Nagasujan Ganesh Kumar

Enloe High School Raleigh, NC

Nagasujan Ganesh Kumar, who goes by Sujan, is a senior at Enloe High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. This was his second year participating in the World of 7 Billion contest. His first place video talked about the benefits of green roofs, and proposed a unique solution.

Sujan had heard about the importance of green space in cities, but he says that he didn’t realize “how green spaces can really affect and boost your mental health.”

The hardest part of the process for him was figuring out a solution that was new and different. “Urbanization is a topic that has been studied heavily, so I need to find a solution that would be viable but also unique,” he said. “I wanted my solution to be something concrete that could actually be applied and built to help solve the issue.”

Sujan has definitely achieved that goal with his solution of modular green roofs—being able to implement green roofs in sections on a smaller scale.“I was just trying to find an efficient solution for the idea of getting more green space,” he said. “I was looking for a solution that would be a bit more cost-effective, and that you could implement anywhere, so that’s when I landed on the idea of modular green roofs.”

To future contest participants, Sujan says that his best piece of advice is to make sure you do thorough research. “You might have a prior understanding on the topic, but you might discover a new perspective on it, and that will help you come up with unique solutions,” he said.

At his school, Sujan enjoys being a part of the Medical Bioscience Academy, a group for students interested in health science-related fields. He also enjoys martial arts and has been doing taekwondo for 12 years. Next year, he will be attending the Georgia Institute of Technology, where plans to study industrial engineering with a concentration in data science.
