2022 High School Winners

Sabina Khizroev is a freshman at Miami Palmetto Senior High School. She entered the World of 7 Billion contest after her AP Environmental Science teacher made the videos an assignment for class.

Her video addresses the benefits of green roofs in cities, and possible ways that they could be implemented successfully. She says that living in Miami allowed her to see many urbanization problems up close and personal in her day-to-day life.

She initially got the idea to make her video on green roofs after learning about the topic in class, but she says that researching for her video highlighted how environmentally important green roofs were. “Before, I kind of thought that they were just an aesthetic thing, so it was really cool to see all of the other environmental benefits they had,” she said.

Making this video was Sabina’s first foray into filmmaking, and like many contestants, she found that the biggest challenge was trying to get all of her information into the 60-second time limit.

Sabina enjoys competing in science and math competitions in her free time and placed in the top category in STEAM for All’s All Girls Math Online Tournament in 2020. As for the future, Sabina is excited about possibly pursuing engineering or computer science, and said that she could see herself going into environmental engineering.
