Preventing Pollution

Aurora Rodriguez

The Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School Dallas, TX

Aurora Rodriguez is a seventh grader at The Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School in Dallas, TX, an all-girls academy within the Dallas School District. She created her video as an assignment in her science class and the Preventing Pollution category particularly spoke to Aurora because of where she lives. As she explained, “Dallas is a very large city so pollution is a very big and noticeable problem here. It was something I could easily relate to and wanted to think of ways to prevent it.” Aurora was surprised to learn just how many cars are in use today so decided to focus her video on emissions and the use of fossil fuels.

While Aurora has made family videos and done some filmmaking in her free time, this was the first time she was limited by contest guidelines on time and content. In fact, trying to fit her script into just one minute was the hardest part of the process for her and her advice to future participants is to first create an outline and then add the details. She warned, “don’t write a long script right away because you’ll have to cut it.” The video clips in Aurora’s film were all original – some footage she already had for previous projects and some was taken specifically for this film.

Aurora likes to volunteer her time to help her community – she has an ongoing role at her local zoo, helping in the children’s zoo with the goats, and also enjoys one-time events like volunteering with her mom at Dallas’s Earth Day event Earth X. Aurora plays the violin in her school orchestra, her favorite subject is science, and she hopes to one day become a marine biologist.
