Why Did the Name of the Contest Change to World of 8 Billion?

The current name of the student video contest – World of 8 Billion – is based on the current global population, which is set to reach 8 billion people in November 2022.

For the past 11 years, the name of the contest was World of 7 Billion. Global population reached 7 billion in 2010, the same year the contest was launched. At the time, Population Education was looking for a way to help teachers mark the population milestone, and a video contest proved to be a fitting project. The contest let students learn about global population growth a fun and unique way, while also gaining important digital and communication skills.

Changing the contest name to World of 8 Billion was the natural next step to keep up with current events as global population continues to grow. And now that the 8 billion milestone is right around the corner, once again teachers can use the student video contest to mark this teachable moment.
